Lighting

Research

Because our video is set entirely in a studio we decided to do some research into the way other band videos are lit in studios. We looked at videos that had a similar look and feel to what we were going for so we could gain useful influences. Below are some stills from the videos that we found with links to the videos in the description.

Jenny Lewis - Just One Of The Guys
Dog Is Dead - Do The Right Thing
The 1975 - Girls
McFly - Love Is On The Radio

From the beginning our idea for lighting has been to have a coloured background. From these videos we also realised that we needed high-key lighting to balance out the colour.

Studio Sessions

In our studio sessions, after we were taught how to use the equipment, we practised our lighting setups. In the video below we are setting up the lights with a blue background. While doing this we found that the white lights directed at Gavin washed out the colour of the background. To solve this, we tilted them down and made the barn doors narrower so that not as much light hit the backdrop.

In our next studio session we practised lighting and performance. We decided to shoot some footage of us in the studio that was somewhat similar to what our video is going to be. We edited this footage into the video you can watch below:

Happy with our lighting we decided to start saving our setups into the studio system. This means that when we are shooting we will have quick and easy access to our lighting. Before we could save all the setups we needed we figured our exactly how many we would need. We wanted different colours for each prop and for each type of performance shot. Below are the notes I made when figuring out how many setups we wanted. In total we have 24 setups.
